Monkasa: A Local Image Viewer for People Who Still Miss Picasa

Monkasa: A Local Image Viewer for People Who Still Miss Picasa

Do you feel this too?
Modern photo apps keep getting heavier and more cloud-first, while many of us just want a fast, quiet local image viewer.

That is why I built Monkasa.

Monkasa is a lightweight, Picasa-inspired desktop image viewer with a simple goal:

  • Open and browse instantly
  • Keep local image navigation fast
  • Stay clean and intuitive

Why This Project Exists

  • The classic workflow still works best: folder tree + thumbnail grid + quick full-view navigation.
  • Many modern tools have more features, but not always better usability for day-to-day browsing.
  • I wanted an open-source alternative focused on practical viewing experience, not feature bloat.

Current Features

  • Opens your home directory (~/) by default
  • Left-side folder tree with expand/collapse
  • Center thumbnail grid for quick scanning
  • Top sort menu for name/time sorting
  • marker on the active sort mode
  • Double-click any thumbnail to enter full-window viewer mode
  • Keyboard ← / → to move to previous/next image
  • Esc or click the black overlay background to exit viewer mode
  • SQLite-based thumbnail cache to avoid repeat decoding and speed up revisit performance

Who It Is For

  • People with large local photo/image folders
  • Users who prefer classic desktop browsing flow
  • Anyone nostalgic for the Picasa-style experience

Runtime Requirements

  • Cross-platform: Windows / macOS / Linux
  • To run: .NET 10 Runtime
  • To build/dev: .NET 10 SDK
